Formation and dynamical evolution of galaxies and of their components
From this vast subject, I will pick out and review three specific topics, namely the formation and evolution of bars, the formation of bulges, and the evolution during multiple major mergers. Bars form naturally in galactic discs. Their evolution is driven by the exchange of angular momentum within the galaxy. This is emitted mainly by near-resonant material in the inner disc (bar), and is abso...
متن کاملHost Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts and their Cosmological Evolution
We use numerical simulations of large scale structure formation to explore the cosmological properties of Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) host galaxies. Among the different sub-populations found in the simulations, we identify the host galaxies as the most efficient star-forming objects, i.e. galaxies with high specific star formation rates. We find that the host candidates are low-mass, young galaxies w...
متن کاملThe Mass and Luminosity Functions of Galaxies and their Evolution
We set up a model for the evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, taking advantage of recent work that brought in some better understanding of the mass function for gravitationally condensed objects. We add to this a simple model of star formation that reproduces the behaviour of the Tully-Fisher relation, in order to attach a luminosity to a massive halo with a given velocity dispersion. ...
متن کاملCo-Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes and Their Host Galaxies
We study the evolution of the MBH /Mhost relation up to z = 3 for a sample of 96 quasars with known host galaxy luminosities. Black hole masses are estimated assuming virial equilibrium in the broad-line regions, while the host galaxy masses are inferred from their luminosities. With this data, we are able to pin down the evolution of the MBH /Mhost relation over 85% of the age of the universe....
متن کاملDetecting Early Galaxies Through Their 21-cm Signature
New observations over the next few years of the emission of distant objects will help unfold the chapter in cosmic history around the era of the first galaxies. These observations will use the neutral hydrogen emission or absorption at a wavelength of 21-cm as a detector of the hydrogen abundance. We predict the signature on the 21-cm signal of the early generations of galaxies. We calculate th...
